2 min read Last reviewed: 28 September 2026

In short

Solar panels and battery storage installed in homes in Great Britain currently qualify for 0% VAT. Batteries added to an existing system have qualified since 1 February 2024. The relief is currently due to end on 31 March 2027, after which the rate is set to return to 5%.

What's covered

  • Installation of solar panels on residential property.
  • Battery storage, whether fitted with new panels or added to an existing system.
  • Supply and installation together by the installer.

Businesses

Commercial installations are charged at the standard rate. VAT-registered businesses can normally reclaim it in the usual way.
