Solar and battery questions answered

Costs & savings

How much do solar panels cost?

It depends on your roof, your electricity use and whether you add a battery. As a guide, our solar-and-battery packages start from £3,950 for a typical two-bedroom home, £4,950 for three bedrooms and £7,250 for four bedrooms, supplied and fitted. Use our calculator for a quick estimate, then we'll give you a fixed written quote.

What will solar actually save me?

Savings depend on how much you generate, how much of it you use yourself, your tariff and whether you have a battery. We work it out from your real bills rather than guessing, and our calculator gives you an indicative figure in under a minute.

Is there VAT on solar panels and batteries?

Solar panels and battery storage installed in homes in Great Britain currently benefit from 0% VAT. This relief is due to run until 31 March 2027. Our quotes always make the VAT position clear.

Can I get paid for the electricity I export?

Yes. Under the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG), larger energy suppliers must offer a tariff that pays you for electricity you send to the grid. Rates vary by supplier, and you'll normally need an MCS-certified installation to qualify.

Solar panels

Does solar work in Manchester?

Yes. Solar panels run on daylight, not heat, so they generate all year round, most in spring and summer and less in winter. Plenty of homes and businesses across the North West run successful solar systems.

Do I need planning permission?

Most home roof installations in England count as 'permitted development' and don't need planning permission, as long as the panels don't stick out more than 200mm from the roof or sit above the highest part of it. Listed buildings, conservation areas and flat roofs can have extra rules. We check this for you at survey stage.

How long do solar panels last?

Panels are built for decades of service. The panels we fit carry a 25-year guarantee, and we'll explain exactly what's covered for every product in your quote.

What happens on a cloudy day?

Panels still generate in cloudy weather, just less. A battery helps by storing surplus from brighter spells so you can use it later.

Battery storage

Do I need a battery with solar?

Not always, but a battery lets you use far more of your own electricity instead of exporting it cheaply and buying it back at full price in the evening. It can also charge from cheap overnight tariffs in winter. We'll tell you honestly whether it's worth it for you.

Can I add a battery to my existing solar panels?

Usually, yes, even if we didn't install your panels. We'll check your inverter and recommend the simplest way to add storage.

Will a battery keep my lights on in a power cut?

Many batteries can provide backup power when set up for it, but not all do so automatically. If backup matters to you, tell us and we'll design for it.

Installation & aftercare

How long does installation take?

Most home installations are completed in one to two days. Commercial projects vary with size, and we'll give you a clear programme up front.

Which areas do you cover?

We cover all ten Greater Manchester boroughs (Manchester, Salford, Trafford, Stockport, Tameside, Oldham, Rochdale, Bury, Bolton and Wigan) and anywhere within about 60 miles, including Cheshire, Lancashire, Merseyside, West and South Yorkshire and the Peak District.

What happens after installation?

We register your system, help you set up the monitoring app and stay on hand if you need us. Our aftercare doesn't stop when the van drives off.

Commercial solar

How quickly does commercial solar pay back?

A well-designed commercial system typically pays for itself in around 3–6 years, depending on your usage profile, roof, tariff and system design. We'll model your own site's figures before you commit.

What size of business do you work with?

From small workshops and shops to warehouses, factories, schools, care homes and large ground-mounted solar farms.

Do we need DNO approval for commercial solar?

Larger systems usually need approval from the local network operator (in most of Greater Manchester, Electricity North West) before connection, under the G99 process. We handle the application for you.
