Commercial solar: a guide for businesses

How commercial solar pays back, what the process looks like and the questions to ask before you sign.

In short

Commercial solar lets a business generate its own electricity on site, mostly during working hours when it uses the most. A well-designed system typically pays for itself in around 3–6 years, reduces exposure to energy price rises and supports carbon-reduction targets.

Why the numbers work for businesses

Businesses use most of their electricity during the day, which is when panels generate. That means a far bigger share of the solar is used on site rather than exported, which is where the real savings come from. Many business roofs are large, flat or unshaded, too.

What affects payback

  • How much electricity you use during daylight hours.
  • What you pay per unit on your current contract.
  • Roof size, orientation, structure and condition.
  • Grid connection constraints (G99).
  • Whether battery storage or EV charging is part of the plan.

Our process

  1. 1ConversationWhat you want to achieve: lower costs, lower carbon, more resilience, or all three.
  2. 2Site & energy assessmentWe survey the site and analyse your half-hourly usage data.
  3. 3Design & financial modelA system designed for your load, with projected generation, savings and payback.
  4. 4ApprovalsDNO (G99), planning and structural checks where needed.
  5. 5Installation & commissioningPlanned around your operations.
  6. 6Monitoring & aftercarePerformance tracked and supported for the long term.

Questions to ask any installer

  • Is the design based on our actual half-hourly data?
  • Who handles the DNO application?
  • What monitoring and aftercare is included?
  • What guarantees apply to each component?
